Expedition 1 – Berlin to Vladivostok By Way of the Caspian (2016)
In 2015 Marcus embarked on an epic journey from Berlin to Vladivostok, but the unique route is what made it truly remarkable. Marcus first headed south into the heartlands of Europe, to Greece and into Turkey. Spending time in Turkey, both working, preparing and planning his onward route, he eventually departed, heading east into the Caucasus – crossing into Georgia. From there he crossed into Azerbaijan and ended up in Baku. From Baku, an old cargo ship was utilized to cross the Caspian and continue the journey in Turkmenistan and onward into Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan not being the most friendly of places, Marcus ended up being barred for 7 years from returning, but this just adds some flavor. From there the journey continued into Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia. All presenting their own problems for the intrepid solo motorcycle rider. Finally reentering Russia and heading for the Road of Bones and Magadan, and then back down – heading for Vladivostok, where the motorcycle was ultimately loaded for shipment back to Germany. As fate would have it, it was in Vladivostok that Marcus met Nils and John for the first time. At the customs broker, Marcus leaving and Nils and John coming in, on what is next on this list, Expedition 2. For this trip Marcus used a Suzuki DR650 motorcycle, that is still alive and well to this day. A remarkably durable piece of kit indeed.
