ABOUT: MAMMOTH – EXPEDITIONS

Mammoth-Expeditions, founded by an eclectic group of outdoor and adventure enthusiasts has become not just our central hub for planning expeditions, travel, adventures and the like, but also the nexus of our friendship, support for each-other and a great way to, with dear friends, explore the ends of the earth. All of us have the drive and urge to push it to the limit and see as much as possible – preferably using a vehicle of some kind, petrol heads we are – of this lovely planet. Our team is uniquely comprised of a diverse group of people, each with their own skill set and outlook. This broad set of skills allows us to not only plan some of the most ambitious expeditions ever conceived, but also to confidently approach the panning and execution of said adventure. We are possibly open to collaborating with another team, should the fit be good, and would be happy to discuss any new or alternative adventure ideas that might be brought to the table. When not planning our next adventure, we all have our own careers, ranging from a stone mason, to a security professional and dog breeder, to a software salesman and a hotel owner. But we all congregate around the idea of expeditionary travel, true challenges and exploration. We have all of course done many independent adventures as well, ranging from climbing the highest peaks to diving the most remote spots on earth, but again we are all drawn back together for the challenge and the adventure of doing something no one has done before and navigating truly challenging terrain.

And by the way, please consider buying our book about Expedition #2, truly a fun read:

Trans-Siberian Road Trip

A soldier and a Software Salesman Driving from Japan, through Russia and Mongolia in an Old Toyota Hi-Lux

Marcus Karnatz

Marcus Karnatz

Marcus, hails from Potsdam Germany, but over the years he has been a resident of many places, is the original founder of Mammoth-Expeditions. He had the idea, while fixing his motorcycle, during one of its many breakdowns, in Uzbekistan. Since fixing his motorcycle, he has gone on to many great adventures, eventually meeting the rest of the crew in Vladivostok in 2016. Marcus is an avid motorcyclist and for some reason Marcus also enjoys torturing himself by driving in the dead of winter to remote locations. Marcus is a great improvising mechanic, if its broke in the bush, Marcus can get it going. Marcus, since early on, has had a fascination with eastern Russia and the remoteness of it. During his many earlier adventures Marcus has crossed the US, Australia and Northern Scandinavia. A true adventurer Marcus is a real asset on any journey. Marcus naturally owns a Land Rover – Range Rover, and several motorcycles.

John Bolger

John Bolger

What can we say about John; well he can certainly navigate bureaucracy – and oh yes he can drive. John, originally from Penrith in the UK, he has spent close to 30 years in Japan, ultimately finding success as a importer and sales genius for medical software. John acts as the expedition planning and logistical lead – as well as our bulwark in dealing with frustration stemming from bureaucratic inertia. John has many years experience off-roading in both Europe and Japan and can get a car out of most any muddy bog. John also naturally owns a Land Rover – Range Rover, a Toyota Hi-Lux, and several other unique cars.

Nils G. Bildt, Ph.D.

Nils G. Bildt, Ph.D.

Aside from driving the most challenging vertical (well almost) environments Nils acts as expedition safety and security lead, as well as navigator and communications tech. Nils has decades of experience working and operating in un-permissive environments and conflict zones around the world, and has worked extensively with militaries in war zones, oil and gas companies as well as NGO’s, in not only areas of conflict with a real risk for kidnap or physical harm, but also in some of the most remote and complex logistical environments on earth. Nils of course owns a Land Rover LR4, a Range Rover and a Toyota 4×4.

Edohara Daisuke

Edohara Daisuke

Intrepid Japanese off-roader (owns a Land Rover Defender 110 of course), with a base in Karuizawa – Nagano Prefecture. Daisuke has been off-roading for decades and when not doing that spends his time running the Family B&B. His driving skills and ability to repair most anything is a tremendous asset to have on any journey.
